was launched in 2005 by Stephen Dancey and Jennifer Dancey
to provide comprehensive information on salsa dance classes
and social dance events in Vancouver. When we established
the website, social media barely existed (Facebook was
launched the year before, in 2004) and Google was in its infancy.
At the time there was a lack of reliable and up-to-date online
information about salsa events and salsa dance lessons in
We originally conceived of SalsaVancouver.net
to be a free, independent and impartial resource about Vancouver's
salsa scene, dance instructors, dance schools, and social
dance events. We offered this service for most of the website's
first ten years, providing a listing of events by every promoter
and a directory of Vancouver salsa instructors. However at
the same time the growth of Facebook, social media, Google
and other online resources has also made it much easier for
people to find accurate and current information online about
the variety of salsa events and dance classes in Vancouver,
and now there is less of a need for SalsaVancouver.net to
provide that service.
When we launched SalsaVancouver.net
in 2005 we were just a couple novice salsa dancers looking
for information about dance classes and events and we were
frustrated by the lack of useful information online - frustrated
enough to create a website! Since 2005 a lot has changed in
our lives and our role within Vancouver's salsa community.
We now run two dance studios, the Dancey
Ballroom and Dance Studio (Downtown at 505 Hamilton
Street) and D2
Dance Studio (in Mount Pleasant, at 55 West 8th Ave),
where we offer dance classes with some of Vancouver's best
instructors as well as weekly social dance events.
We never set out with any kind of vision
to become event organizers or promoters, or start a succesful
dance studio business with two dance studio locations and
one of the largest programs of social partner dance classes
in Canada. As we shifted our focus to our dance studios, the
SalsaVancouver.net website also evolved into a resource for
the events and classes at our two studio locations, and for
the instructors who teach at our studios.
We continue to organize special events
such as Sunday
Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square, the annual series of
free salsa dances held outdoors in downtown Vancouver every
summer which has grown to become one of Vancouver's annual
summer festivals. And we continue to organize fundraiser events
which strengthen community partnerships for the salsa dance
community, including our annual Salsa For The Kids Fundraisers
for The KidSafe Project Society.
